My entry 'Set Sail' and work in progress artwork for the Atomhawk 'The Adventure Begins' Art Competition...
A lone sailor, just barely making it out of a storm the day before, awakes amongst desolate pinnacles on a shallow reef. Climbing the highest rock, one source of hope beams on the horizon, the wreck of an old bulk carrier!
The biggest challenge I faced, from my last composition to the final result here, was creating context for the viewer. A core focal point for both the viewer and the sailor. For me, the vast open ocean on the horizon just wasn't captivating enough for the adventure theme. Eventually, I landed on the idea of scrap survival and looked towards the films Mad Max and Waterworld for inspiration!
